NO GODS NO MASTERS SERIES: GLOBE CINEMA
The Globe is a cultural touchstone for cinema in North America and one of the last of its kind indie venues. In form and function, it predates 1995, but it was then that it came to stand on the shoulders of (and replace) Towne Cinema. Now, 30 years later, the @Globecinema_yyc still stands and continues to pass the test of time without compromising its commitment to preserving cinematic history and promoting safe spaces for Calgary communities to gather.
Not only is it one of the last 35mm-capable theatres in the city, it’s metamorphosed into more than that. The Globe prioritizes keeping bookings for various private and community events as accessible as possible in both price and availability. So, whether you’re a filmmaker wanting to show something of your own or just a person looking to play videogames on the big screen with a bunch of your friends, don’t count the Globe out, because they certainly haven’t counted you out.
In terms of the films they screen and promote, the Globe does indeed think globally. But they act locally, collaborating with homegrown businesses and organizations to bring unique movie experiences to the city it calls home. Their programming is updated regularly and sometimes last minute—see previous paragraph re. private bookings. So be sure to check their site and socials regularly to avoid missing anything great like this coming week’s Artifact Film Festival and the Calgary Underground Film Festival hot on the heels of that.

NO GODS NO MASTERS SERIES: SloW Pour

Conservation Brew #4
This beer is the fourth in our Conservation Brew Series—a series hatched with, and in support of, the Wilder Institute. This year, we’re focusing on the burrowing owl. Once a more mainstream sight ‘round these parts, this underground nester’s dwindling numbers have called concerned conservationists to action. While still listed as an Endangered species in Canada, there is cause for celebration amidst the concern: last year, the Wilder Institute released the 100th burrowing owl of their head-starting program into the wild. Drink this beer to show you give a hoot.
